Our Town

The Hilo Community Players is proud to bring Our Town, a great American play by Thornton Wilder, to Hawaii Island starting February 7th, 2020 at The East Hawaii Cultural Center. This production marks the 82nd anniversary of the play, and of the Hilo Community Players. This is a match made in heaven, right here in Hilo.

Wilder won a Pulitzer Prize for this play and Our Town immediately became a favorite of high school drama clubs and community theaters. Many theater groups have found its lack of scenery to be a novelty, and a budget saver. It is largely because of the many high school productions, where all the characters were played by high school kids, that Our Town became known as a sweetly sentimental piece. That is not the whole story!

Our Town is rightly famous for its great insights into the human condition. Since there are few set pieces or props the actors become the scenery. Wilder’s words are prized for their straightforward sense and gentle humor.

This is a three act play about life and human nature.  It has been performed all over the world in dozens of languages. The Hilo Community Players are happy to bring this theatrical treasure to our town.

Theon Weber plays the role of the Stage Manager- the narrator of the play and one of the most interesting characters in American theatrical history. Tyler Dela Cruz is Emily and her journey in the play is awe-inspiring. Her sister Cori and mother June join the cast as well as many other experienced performers and newcomers.

The other fourteen characters are brought to life by local actors who cover a wide range of backgrounds and experiences

Our Town is directed by Randal McEndree- a board member of Hilo Community Players. Ray Ryan is the Producer for Hilo Community Players and Kala Daily Hernandez is the Backstage Manager. Stephen Richmond is the Lighting Designer and Jackie Pualani Johnson is the Costume Designer. The original song “Our Town, Our Home” was composed by the “Ukulele Lady” BJ Soriano and she will perform it live on opening night Friday, February 7, 2020 at 7:30 pm.

The Show runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2:30pm from Feb 7-23, 2020 at the East Hawai’i Cultural Center’s Kahua ‘Elua performance theater.
