22nd Annual Wailea Village Mochi Pounding
Wailea Mochi Pounding started with 23 people, mostly neighbors, and has grown over the 22 year period as more and more folks hear about it. Last year over 1000 folks participated in the events
This year it will be on Saturday , December 28th, 2019, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m., at Akiko’s Buddhist B&B in Wailea in the Hakalau area, 15 mile marker on Highway 19. Come & experience what now has become a tradition for many locals & visitors. Join us for the Wailea Village 22nd Annual Mochi Pounding celebration in making traditional rice cakes the "old-fashioned" way. Everyone takes their turn at pounding the glutinous sticky rice for good luck.
Fire building starts at 6:30 a.m. to steam the rice. The classic $5 chicken or vegetarian hekka plate lunch made by Miyo of Miyo’s Restaurant will be ready by 10 a.m.
Other events include new years crafts & calligraphy, Hakalau Seniors goodies, kadomatsu floral arrangements, local authors, used book sales, massage, local orchids & bamboo, blessings and prayers of hope for the new year, I Ching readings, fortune telling, Hawaiian entertainment & more; a fabulous cultural mix of everything that makes our Hawaii so special.
